Health Maintenance
Health Maintenance
Are you one of those healthy people? Do you say you
don't need to watch your diet or use supplements because,
"Hey, I'm healthy"?
Or, do you have a few minor health worries, but chalk them
up to "I'm getting older, what do you expect?"
If one of those statements reflects your sentiments, wise
up! Now when you are young; or now, when you are older and
healthy; or now, when you are just easing into middle age is
the time to act.
Don't wait, or you'll cause yourself unnecessary health
worries and health expenses.
Look at it this way. You regularly change the oil in your
car. If you wait too long, you risk ruining your engine and
experiencing car repair hassles and big bills, or buying a new
car. The same holds true with your health. By practicing
health maintenance - changing your oil - you can avoid big
health hassles and big health expenses as you age. And, you
can't go out and buy a new body!

Few Facts? Medical care costs money and medical
crises can be avoided by preventative means. Consider:
Heart attack: A by-pass operation costs some US
$41,000. Estimates for overall heart attack costs average some
US $212,000. Exercise and diet reduce the risk and cost.
Osteoporosis: Hip fracture surgery runs to some US
$23,000. Many experts say that at least 1/3 of all
osteoporotic fractures may have a nutritional basis. Exercise,
diet, and supplementation cost little.
Cancer: The cost per year of life gained is US
$82,845 for patients with solid tumors (stomach, breast, lung
and genital cancers), US $189,339 for patients with leukemia
or lymphatic cancers, and US $449,544 for other cancers.
Treatment for breast cancer averages some CDN $30,000. Studies
have shown that eating carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables
may reduce risk of cancer by nearly 50 percent and slow
progression of existing tumors.
Colds and flu: In 1995, flu deaths accounted for 6.5
percent of all deaths worldwide. Colds and the flu also result
in countless sick days at school and work. Rest, exercise, and
supplements may be able to cut sick days in half.
Constipation: Constipation is the most common
digestive disorder in the United States and some $200 million
is spent annually on medication. An easier solution is to eat
more fiber.
| The perfect health maintenance
product? |
Fiber is one of the premier health
maintenance foods you can consume. No less than the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration allows health claims on
fiber and cancer and fiber (including psyllium) and
heart disease, when combined with low intake of fat,
saturated fat, and cholesterol.
Another key to health maintenance is detoxification.
This is the process of eliminating the harmful
substances that make their way into our bodies every
day. These include food additives and pollutants from
air and water. Fiber helps detoxify.
Herbal
Fiberblend combines fiber and cleansing herbs to
provide you with the perfect product to safeguard your

The Pros
Agree According to the U.S. Deputy Assistant
Secretary of Health of the Department of Health and Human
Services, taking preventive steps "could eliminate an
estimated 45 percent of cardiovascular deaths, 23 percent of
cancer deaths, and more than 50 percent of the disabling
complications of diabetes. Better control of fewer than 10
risk factors - for example, poor diet, infrequent exercise,
use of tobacco and drugs, and the abuse of alcohol - could
prevent between 40 percent and 70 percent of all premature
deaths, a third of all cases of acute disability, and
two-thirds of all cases of chronic disability."
The Council for Responsible Nutrition has announced that
the appropriate use of dietary supplements has the following
potential benefits:
- Reduced incidences of neural tube birth defects by 50
percent or more;
- Reduced infectious diseases in the elderly, and a
potential cut in the number of sick days by half;
- Reduced rate of hip fractures by 20 percent;
- Delayed onset of cataracts by 10 years, which would cut
the need for cataract operations by half;
- Reduced incidence of and mortality from heart disease;
- Reduced incidence of and mortality from cancer.
Health
Maintenance at its Best Heard enough to get
motivated to think about your health when you have good
health? An easy way to practice health maintenance is to look
into AIM's Healthy Cell Concept. If you follow the five
principles of this sensible concept, you'll find that you may
avoid many of the health problems that arise as you age.
The Healthy Cell Concept considers the cell as the starting
point for health. The cell is the basic unit of the body, and
cells form to create tissue, which forms organs, and
combinations of organs form our body systems. It makes sense
then, that if we keep the cell healthy, we are healthy.
We keep the cell healthy by practicing five principles:
- Cell Food: Everything our cells need can be found
in pure, whole natural, fresh foods.
- Cell Exercise: Our cells need exercise to remain
healthy. Exercise provides strength, flexibility, and mental
alertness, and promotes overall good health.
- Cell Environment: We must consider the
environment around us. The quality of the water we use and
the air we breathe is important to our health.
- Cell Protection: The immune system is our best
tool for fighting disease. We can help it through rest,
exercise, stress management, and diet.
- Healthy Mental Attitude: A positive attitude
toward life makes you feel better and helps you fight
disease.
If we practice these, we maintain our
health!

Thiols?
|
Thiols are a phytochemical found in
garlic, onions, leeks, radishes, and similar foods.
Thiols and their related constituents, which include
allylic sulfides (allicin) and organo-sulfur compounds,
maintain healthy cholesterol levels and have
antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.
One great garlic source of phytochemicals is alpine
wild garlic, which comes from the Allium ursinum
species. This species has up to 20 times more adenosine
than regular supplement garlic, and studies at George
Washington University show adenosine to have powerful
effects on maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.
Alpine wild garlic is available as
